Gum Disease Treatment Sandstone Point Residents Can Rely On

If your gums are red, swollen and/or bleeding when you brush your teeth or bite into crunchy food, then you may have gum disease. Fortunately, the disease can be brought under control with gum disease treatment. Sandstone Point dentists provide a variety of treatment options depending on the severity of your condition.

Why do I have gum disease?

Gum disease is caused by plaque – a soft sticky substance which forms a light film on your teeth and contains millions of bacteria. If plaque isn’t removed by daily brushing and flossing, it will eventually harden into a substance known as tartar.

As tartar starts to collect along the gum line, it becomes harder to brush and floss your teeth resulting in inflammation and tenderness of the gums.

This condition is known as gingivitis and is what we term as early gum disease. Sandstone Point Dental patients should know that at this stage, it’s usually just the gum tissue that is affected. Failure to treat gingivitis, however, can lead to periodontitis – a more serious type of gum disease which may lead to bone erosion and tooth loss.

The problem with gum disease

Unfortunately, most people don’t realise they have gum disease in the early stages. This is why our Sandstone Point dentists recommend you visit them, should your gums begin to feel tender or appear red or swollen.

Early detection avoids the need for time-consuming and costly treatments further down the line.

Gum disease treatment at Sandstone Point Dental

Depending on the severity of your condition, treatments for gum disease include:

Scale and Clean

This involves removing any build-up of tartar with special dental instruments. This is followed with a quick polish of your teeth to remove staining. In mild cases, professional treatment along with regular brushing and flossing at home is all that’s needed to reverse gingivitis.

Scaling and root planing

More in-depth cleaning may be necessary if plaque or tartar has formed below the gumline. In this instance, our Sandstone Point dentist will remove any tartar from periodontal pockets before planing or smoothing the surface of the tooth roots, so that bacteria can’t stick to them.
In the most severe of cases, periodontal surgery may need to be considered.

If you’re concerned about gum disease or have missed a six-monthly check-up, then why not visit the friendly dental team at Sandstone Point Dental. We can give you peace of mind or draw up a treatment plan to meet your dental needs.
