Crowns and bridges can help restore function

Dental Crowns in Sandstone Point – What Can They Fix?

Do you want to know more about dental crowns? Sandstone Point Dental regularly uses them to restore patients’ smiles. They work individually or in combination with a dental bridge to restore smiles. But what exactly are they and what problems can they fix?

Crowns and bridges in Sandstone Point provide a fixed solution to damaged or missing teeth. As part of restorative dentistry, these prosthetic devices restore functionality and aesthetics to your smile.

A crown is used when the tooth structure had been weakened or damaged. A bridge is used to fill in a gap left by one or more missing teeth.

What is a dental crown?

A crown is simply a term for a false tooth that’s generally manufactured in a dental lab. Here at Sandstone Point Dental, however, we use CEREC technology to design and mill natural-looking porcelain crowns on-site. Not only does this help keep costs down but it also means our patients benefit from our ‘crown in a day’ procedure.

Dental crowns are used by Sandstone Point Dental to restore existing teeth that are damaged or weak. First, the tooth has to be filed down and shaped into a smaller size. Then what remains of the tooth structure is restored so it’s able to support a crown. This is placed over the newly shaped tooth, a bit like a cap, and cemented into place.

What are dental bridges? Our Sandstone Point dentist explains

Dental bridges are fixed prosthetic appliances that replace one or more missing teeth. Usually, they’re made from porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) which provides strength and a more natural appearance.

A bridge normally consists of a porcelain crown(s) to replace the tooth/teeth which are missing. In many cases, the teeth on either side of the gap are filed down and reshaped to accommodate a crown. These crowns are then fused to another crown(s) which sits in the area where the tooth/teeth are missing, effectively ‘bridging’ the gap.

Bridges are often used as an alternative to dental implants, or where the teeth on either side of the missing tooth are heavily filled or broken. This way, both the gap and the heavily filled teeth either side of it can be fixed for a similar price to a single dental implant and crown restoration.

Once a bridge has been cemented into position, it looks and functions just like your natural teeth. Whether you have crowns or bridges in Sandstone Point, it’s important to care for them with daily brushing and flossing combined together with regular check-ups with your dentist to keep your mouth and teeth healthy.
